Frequently Asked Questions

Would I be able to claim back from the medical aid?

Unfortunately not.  Wellness Counsellors are not eligible to claim from medical aids, therefore clients are responsible to settle their own consultation fees.  This is also why our fees tend to be much lower.

What is a Wellness Counsellor?

Mental health professionals like psychologists are not always accessible to everyone.  Luckily counsellors are also there to assist and can be very valuable with assisting people with a wide variety of concerns. The objective of wellness counsellors is to work with all integrated aspects of human existence in order to enhance total wellbeing.

The most important things to keep in mind is firstly that counselling is not advice giving but rather a collaborative relationship between client and counsellor where both parties actively work toward the client’s therapeutic goals.

Secondly it is important to keep in mind that counsellors are not psychologists or psychiatrists.  This means that we cannot diagnose pathology or prescribe medication.  We as counsellors are obliged to refer clients to the required professionals should serious mental disorders or medical conditions such as cancer or high blood pressure be present.

How many sessions do I need?

Most of my clients see me for between 6 – 12 sessions. Bare in mind though that the amount of sessions varies between clients and are dependent on things like:

-a client’s therapeutic goals

-a client’s personality (some people take longer to open up than others)

-a client’s attitude (willingness to be actively involved in enhancing your wellbeing)
